Storage Systems: The Role of NAS in Data Control and Accessibility

Having total control of your data is crucial for creating seamless media workflows. Storage systems serve as a safeguard to prevent data loss and enable easy accessibility for teams connected to the same network.

NAS, which stands for Network-attached storage, shares data from multiple sources and can be accessed remotely. These systems are designed to be both flexible and scalable, offering advantages over public storage while allowing for greater control. Some of their benefits  include:

  • Centralised storage to access files from multiple devices.
  • File sharing and collaboration on shared projects.
  • Data backup to avoid data loss.
  • Remote access to control information no matter where you are.
  • Growth capability to expand your storage capacity as much as needed.
  • Data security to avoid unauthorised access to your information.
  • Media streaming capabilities as an option.

QNAP storage systems

QNAP storage systems come in different sizes and shapes to be tailored to your needs. Their features include expandability, remote access, data protection and an App ecosystem for easy control.

As space is often a premium, we recently tailored a solution for a space-efficient design by deploying multiple short-depth rackmount 2.5GbE NASs, with PCIe expandability and HDMI output supporting 4K media playback and real-time transcoding.

Some of the QNAP solutions include:

QNAP 2-BAY NAS

Compact and suitable for small office environments as they accommodate two hard drives. The drive bays allow for RAID configuration, which means you can combine the drives for data redundancy or increased storage capacity.

QNAP 4-BAY DESKTOP NAS

Designed to accommodate up to four hard drives and provide centralised storage and file-sharing capabilities within a local area network. It handles simultaneous file transfers, media streaming and other tasks.

QNAP 8-BAY SHORT-DEPTH RACKMOUNT NAS

With centralised storage and file-sharing capabilities in a compact format for environments where the space is limited or rack depth is an issue.

QNAP 16-BAY NAS

With advanced data management capabilities for businesses that require large amounts of storage. Key features include Cloud integration.

Supermicro systems

Supermicro storage systems are flexible and customisable, focused on high performance, scalability and reliability.

Some key features and components are:

  • Rack-mountable storage chassis to house multiple hard drives or solid-state drives (SSDs).
  • JBOD systems to expand storage capacity without the need for additional server infrastructure.
  • RAID configurations for enabling data redundancy and improving performance.
  • Support of both SAS and SATA interfaces.
  • High-speed connectivity options for flexible connectivity with servers, network infrastructures and external storage devices.
  • Management and monitoring tools to configure their storage systems.
  • Redundancy and high availability to minimise the risk of data loss or downtime.
  • Hot-swappable drive bays for drive replacement or addition.

Everything you need to know about SRT Gateway

Everything you need to know about Secure Reliable Transport (SRT Gateway)

Haivision SRT Gateway, which stands for Secure Reliable Transport, is designed to carry live video streams over the internet in the most secure way possible. This open-source video streaming protocol enables high-quality video delivery, even in unpredictable network conditions.

The Gateway is a reliable and secure tool for live streaming across a wide range of IP networks. It acts as a bridge by sending content to one or several destinations. Although the broadcast market benefits from it when it comes to production and distribution, it can be applied to many industries.

Live streaming

Consumption of streamed material is at an all-time high, and growing. Daily activities such as watching a live interview or a concert in real-time from any device are only possible through live video streaming. This occurs when the streamed material is sent as it’s happening. This has largely changed the way of consuming information such as TV broadcasting, video games, and social media channels, to name a few.

How does SRT work?

Haivision developed SRT as a tool to help improve workflows within the broadcast industry by helping broadcasters to transport footage across unpredictable networks without sacrificing the quality of the image. It’s a flexible and scalable solution for the secure routing of live video streams.

SRT works in real-time, optimising your content to adapt efficiently to specific networks and making it possible to stream media seamlessly in situations such as remote contribution, backhaul, return feeds, bi-directional interviews, and content distribution for international syndication.

Secure Reliable Transport software is a game-changer tool thanks to its interoperability. It ensures flexibility to support different source and destination points over all types of IP networks.

Private Cloud: maximise your production workflow

Private Cloud: maximise your production workflow

At CETS, we believe in creating efficient and agile workflows that are tailored to your production requirements. Private Cloud is an efficient solution that enables collaborative remote workflows, in a highly secure and scalable environment.

Why is it important to rely on a Private Cloud?

One of the main advantages of this solution is having full control over the infrastructure and your data, giving your organisation peace of mind. Compared to the public cloud, Private Cloud offers greater security and privacy.

Benefits

  • Enhanced privacy: reducing the risk of data breaches or unauthorised access to sensitive information.
  • Flexibility: the IT infrastructure can be scaled up or down as needed, allowing fast response to business demands.
  • Complete control: guaranteeing customisation of the cloud according to specific requirements.
  • Cost-effective: optimising your workflow and reducing wastage over time.

The solution

We architected our Cloud using industry-leading hardware to upgrade your workflow by providing not only access to efficient media ingest and upload but workstation options (MAC or PC), industrial-grade storage on Avid Nexis, user connectivity via browser-based tools, single or dual-screen configuration, and remote monitoring- edit review via SRT.

Private Cloud service adapts to your workflow by offering total control of your data and infrastructure.

All Stations Go for on-site Broadcast

All Stations Go for on-site Broadcast

All stations were a go for the CETS crew heading up on-site broadcast, post-production and ingest services for Screentime Australia and Channel 7’s, SAS: Australia production.

The Australian franchise of the UK series, SAS: Who Dares Wins, is a reality TV show where seventeen celebrities, athletes and stars are challenged to complete SAS selection course training. Special Forces trainers put contestants to the ultimate test of willpower, strength of mind and physical endurance.

Just like the recruits, We were eager to step up to the challenge providing 24/7 support to the production team. CETS provided the fixed rig camera systems, media storage and data wrangling. It also provided remote internet connection and equipment to the remote production site near Jindabyne, NSW.

COVID-19 and climate condition challenges

Project and R&D engineer Rob Burton said the team had to jump through some hurdles and conquer logistical barriers to provide all the on-site cameras and equipment.

“With 38 cameras around the production set, there were some logistical challenges. Not least of which was the challenge of working with COVID-19 restrictions”, he said.

Despite the tough conditions, the team provided solutions to ensure high-quality coverage of the training base.

Pete Laird, Head of CETS, said the camera and operating equipment were just one of the obstacles the team worked through on their journey. The weather also provided a challenge.

“The windy and cloudy days meant that the internet connection wasn’t quite cutting it for the amount of work required for the start of production.

“Our team dug deep to make the best of the extreme conditions finding all available solutions, but as luck would have it, on one of the last days of prep we were blessed with a sunny, wind-free day. This meant we could adjust our solutions for optimum performance,” he said.

Overall, CETS helped ease the production setup and workflow for SAS: Australia contributing to what is now a hit series.
