The impact of Fixed Rig in non-scripted TV

The impact of Fixed Rig in non-scripted TV

In the last decade, we have witnessed the rise of fixed rig camera systems on a wide variety of TV Shows. Production teams now have the freedom to non-intrusively film in fast-paced environments without disrupting the talent, capturing the unique moments that help make non-scripted shows especially appealing.

Our Fixed Rig workflow introduces fresh and engaging features, some of which have never been seen before. Ray Martin, our Head of Technical Services says, “The workflow allows us to create solutions that perfectly fit a large percentage of productions. Not too small, not too big. It really is the Goldilocks Story”.

What does a Fixed Rig workflow look like to us?

Some aspects we like to consider before starting any project include the turnaround time from shoot to delivery; how the media is processed, transported and backed up; plus how much time is required in Post Production to turn the show around and be ready for broadcast. By carefully analysing these aspects, we can select the most suitable equipment and workflow for the project.

Camera and lens selection are pivotal to the success of such productions. The Sony FR-7 is one of our favourites because it allows us to capture intimate moments while maintaining cinematic quality we expect from cameras like the Sony FX6 and FX9.

Depending on the project’s needs, we can rig up to 100 cameras to enable capture of every moment across various coverage areas. The small footprint of the Fixed Rig infrastructure enables productions to be more flexible in choice of location and allows for greater latitude for producers to capture the magic moments that are ultimately identified as gold material for the storylines.

Our control room is custom-built in readiness to capture footage in-camera or on servers depending on the client’s needs. Pronology mRes systems are deployed for each project to capture live streams of content and deliver directly to Post. A wide range of codecs and frame rates are on offer using this technology.

Some smaller productions need to squeeze into areas with limited space available, i.e. a carport or back office. Additionally, some spaces only come with limited air-conditioning, plus the infrastructure is required to be very close to the operators during the shoot where nearby fan noise could be a problem. Ray Martin added, “Our Engineers designed the server rack to suit such conditions. They streamlined the processing of the servers and introduced specialised airflow technology that allowed for optimum operation in warm areas and greatly reduced the fan noise to a whisper. Thus making a harmonious control room environment for everybody”.

In summary, we believe that there is a significant difference before and after using Fixed Rig systems. Productions benefit from the increased volume of footage that the cameras can capture to help construct a compelling story in real time. This is made possible by the less intrusive nature of these setups, which can sometimes make the talent forget that they are being filmed.

The Inspired Unemployed’s (Impractical) Jokers are back for another season

The Inspired Unemployed’s (Impractical) Jokers are back for another season

Our favourite jokers returned this month to Network 10 for another season of pranks. Jack, Falcon, Dom and Liam got more creative than ever putting themselves into the most awkward scenarios in front of crowds unaware of hidden cameras recording every second of it.

To help the Inspired Unemployed get as unhinged as they wanted without being caught this season, we had one mission: to provide a compact and discreet setup.

Practical Solutions for Impractical Scenarios

Throughout the series, we hid several Sony ILME-FR7 cameras within various props. The impressive light sensitivity of the Sony FR7 allowed us to use tinted glass without needing a TV lighting rig, preserving the natural light in settings like cafes, nail salons, and teppanyaki restaurants. This ensured the “marks” felt they were entering normal establishments.

We controlled, monitored, and recorded the Sony FR7s from small rooms near the filming area, often no larger than a staff room or storage space. Each shoot had unique needs and obstacles, but our compact and mobile setup even enabled filming in multiple locations in one day. Our team included 2 Hot Head Operators, an Engineer, Audio, EP, and Director. This small footprint was crucial for shooting in tight environments. CETS designed a tailored solution considering mobility, footprint, quick deployment, and streamlined delivery into Post with Pronology mRes.

Delivering a project like The Inspired Unemployed’s (Impractical) Jokers challenged our team to be as creative as possible in creating a flawless setup that captured every detail but was discreet enough to avoid alerting people. This was possible thanks to the effort our team always puts into any challenge they are presented with.

LED Screens: Everything you need to know about them

LED Screens: Everything you need to know about them

When it comes to LED screens, the market is flooded with options. All industries have found the visual impact of LED screens an effective way to display and advertise their services. Not only are they user-friendly, but suitable for a wide range of applications in different industries.

Among their attributes, energy efficiency is key due to lower consumption than traditional screens. The brightness and the image quality offered are a plus that makes LED the right choice for outdoor advertising, conferences and more.

CETS Green Space

That’s why when we decided to renovate the green space in our West End Studio, a custom LED Display to showcase our post-production team’s creative projects was the right choice. We were looking for:

  • A seamless and versatile design
  • A high-definition 1.2 mm to 1.8-pixel pitch
  • A 6.4 mm x 3.8 mm customised screen
  • Wireless and LAN screen sharing
  • Lightweight and compact structure
  • Low power consumption

The outcome exceeded our expectations, proving once again why LED screens are excellent resources to leverage any project. Here below we’ve listed what we consider to be some of  the best displays on the market:

QSTECH: Intelligent Portable LED Display & Poster

QSTECH LED screens are made to be installed in three different modes:  foot, hanging and wall mounting. Not only you can control them remotely through any smart device but are simple to set up using a network cable, WiFi connection or USB.

Additionally, the screen’s configuration guarantees brightness and chroma uniformity as the calibration has been one pixel to pixel (1.9mm or 2.5mm). Thanks to its pre-assembled structure and size (610 x1715 mm), you can adapt them to a wide range of spaces. The product has also been designed to be stacked up to a maximum of six LED screens for larger displays.

Tourism and Events QLD recently took delivery of their 6-screens mobile showcase and put them to work on the floor of the Victorian Caravan Camping & Touring Supershow 2023 as an integral component of their Drive Holidays display. As a result, the LED screen made an immediate impact at the show, earning TEQ the ‘Best Stand’ award in the Tourism category. You can read the full article here

TEQ: “Best Stand Award” at the Victorian Caravan Camping & Touring Supershow

Congratulations TEQ: “Best Stand Award” at the Victorian Caravan Camping & Touring Supershow

The Victorian Caravan Camping & Touring Supershow in Melbourne was Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) opportunity to showcase the great State of Queensland. CETS worked closely with the TEQ marketing team to build their portable LED screen solution which was a vibrant and impactful component of TEQ’s touring stand.

Drive Queensland Managing Director Fiona Nicholl said: “The five-day exhibition was a great opportunity to capture the attention of more than 40,000 attendants to the show. Our new partnership with TEQ and QLD RTO’s enabled us to provide the best experience and highlight Queensland’s destinations by having a larger presence covering all regions and incorporating our new stand design”.

The intelligent system and the fine pixel pitch (1.9mm) of a Portable LED Display were key in helping TEQ to encourage people to visit Queensland. The outcome couldn’t have been better as the team won ‘Best Stand’ of the show in the Tourism category.
